En Primeur also known as Wine Futures refers to the process of buying wines before they are bottled and released onto the market. Wines are usually delivered 2-3 years after the vintage, in unmixed case of 6 or 12 bottles.
The main advantage of buying en primeur is to purchase a wine at the initial release price. Some wines are seldom available commercially or will be more expensive if bought later on. The opening En Primeur price is almost always considerably cheaper than the future price of the wine on the open market.
Historically, this has been especially true in great vintages such as 1982, 1989, 1990 and 2000 and 2003. Eg, in 1989, a chateau called Clinet, relatively unknown outside France, released its En Primeur at a mere 15 Euros a bottle. Today it is traded in Bordeaux at about 270 Euros a bottle...a staggering 1700% yield!!! Imagine the yield for “blue chip” stocks!!!
Most wines that are produced in limited quantities, En Primeur buying is sometimes the only way to secure these wines. (some properties produce as little as 300 cases a year!).
Bordeaux 2005 wines will be available for release in early summer 2008. You may request for actual delivery, storage in Singapore or storage to remain in Bordeaux, which we can arrange for you.
All En Primeur purchases are quoted in Singapore Currency exclusive of any Goods and Services Tax (GST). Prices are offered lying ex-cellaring Bordeaux. Prices do not include shipping, freight insurance or government duties. If and when you choose to have the wines delivered, the abovementioned charges become payable. Additional costs is estimated at $20.00 per bottle. Goods and Services Tax at the prevailing rates will also be levied on the imported value of the wines brought into Singapore. The current GST rate is 5%. These will be billed to you separately.
The question arises as to who buys En Primeur? A little background understanding of the wine trade helps. Generally, people in the wine business (e.g. brokers, négociants, merchants, wholesalers) are the main buyers of En Primeur. The Chateaux do not sell their wines direct to end consumers according to century old tradition. Hence, traditionally, each Chateau will have a few exclusive negociants or wine merchants who will get special allocation for their wines. These negociants would then sell these wines to importers and wholesalers, then finally to the consumers through retail stores and restaurants, etc.
Many wine enthusiasts, and, in recent years investors also partake in this yearly ritual, basically for the same reasons of supply and price advantages. Priority allocations are often assured for those who follow the En Primeur campaigns faithfully every year. Wine merchants like us who have long and good standing relationships with the Chateaux are given special allocations and prices of the real En Primeur or "first release" prices against payments up front. We ,in turn, upon requests from customers like yourself, may turn around and sell some of these allocation for the same reason . similar to receiving placements of shares before an IPO, before they are listed on the stock exchange. However, because of the recent boom in demand for these wines globally, wine merchants tend to hold back the release of their En Primeur in anticipation of a rise in price after the first release.
